Dealer vs junkyard
Why sell a damaged car to a dealer instead of a junkyard?
A junkyard or tow-for-cash buyer mostly pays for scrap metal. A dealer pays for what the vehicle is actually worth, including parts and a repair that may cost us far less than it would cost you.

Leave it to us
Should I fix my car before selling it?
Usually not. When you're selling a car that needs repairs, the repair rarely adds as much value as it costs, especially for body work, engines and transmissions. A dealer can usually repair it for less than you can, and we account for that in your offer.
The exceptions are cheap fixes:
- A dead battery
- A burned-out bulb
- A flat tire
- A missing gas cap
Everything else, leave it to us. More detail: should I fix my car before selling it?
After an accident
Should I sell my car after an accident?
If the repair is big, your insurance payout is low, or you simply don't trust the car anymore, selling it can make sense. You have two options:
Skip the body shop
Sell it as-is, before repairs
We price the damage and you skip the body shop.
Only sometimes worth it
Repair it, then sell
Worth it only if insurance covers most of the cost.
An accident on the history report lowers value either way, so get an offer before you commit to a big repair. Full guide: selling a car after an accident.
Frame, totaled, salvage
The damage most buyers won't touch
Selling a car with frame or structural damage
Frame damage scares most private buyers away, and many online buyers won't touch it. We still make offers on cars with frame and structural damage. We price them based on the repair and what the vehicle is worth afterward.
How to sell a totaled car
When your insurer declares a total loss, you usually have two choices:
- 1Take the full payout and let the insurance company keep the car.
- 2Keep the car and take a smaller payout. The car usually gets a salvage title.
If you kept your totaled car, we can make you an offer on it as it is. Selling a totaled car with a clean title, because it was never reported to insurance? Tell us up front. We'll check the history and price it fairly.
Selling a car with a salvage title in Ohio and Michigan
Can you sell a salvage title car? Yes, but most private buyers won't take one, and many dealers won't either. Here's what to know:
- Ohio: A vehicle declared a total loss gets a salvage title. Before it can be driven again, it must be repaired and pass a salvage inspection by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Then it receives a rebuilt title.
- Michigan: A badly damaged vehicle gets a salvage title. Severe damage can mean a scrap title, which can't be titled for the road again.
- Value: A salvage or rebuilt title lowers the value and the trade-in value compared with a clean-title twin. How much depends on the repairs and the vehicle.
We look at salvage and rebuilt-title vehicles case by case. More detail: selling a car with a salvage title and selling a car with a rebuilt title.
Where to sell a non-running car
A car that won't start or can't be driven is still worth something: parts, metal, and often a repair that's cheaper for a dealer than for you. Instead of taking a scrapyard price, get a dealer offer that reflects what your non-running car is really worth.
When you contact us, tell us:
- 1Does it start? Does it drive?
- 2What happened (warning light, noise, overheating, accident)?
- 3Does it need a tow?
We'll take it from there.

Not a scrapyard
Who buys totaled, wrecked and non-running cars near me?
- 01Paid for parts and repair value, not by the pound
- 02Insurance, title and loan paperwork handled
- 03No towing games, no last-minute price cuts
If you're asking who buys totaled cars near you, or who buys cars with blown engines near you, Reineke does.
Most places that buy non-running cars are scrapyards paying by the pound. We're a dealer, so you can sell your wrecked car for cash and get paid for what the vehicle is actually worth, including parts and repair value.
That makes Reineke one of the best places to sell a non-running car in northwest Ohio and Downriver Michigan. We're also accident car buyers who handle the insurance, title and loan paperwork for you. Our cash for non-running cars comes with no towing games and no last-minute price cuts.
