Trade in your car

Trade in your car for a number that won’t change.

When you trade in your car at Reineke, you get a real trade-in value from a real appraiser. That means an actual number based on your actual vehicle, not an online range that changes the minute you walk in. We are a family-owned dealer group that has been buying and selling cars in Ohio and Michigan since 1960. Today we take in around 6,500 vehicles a year across 8 stores.

Start online in a couple of minutes. Bring your car, truck, SUV or van to any Reineke store. Put your trade-in straight toward your next vehicle, or take the same offer as a check. Either way:

  • There are no hidden fees
  • Your offer is good for 7 full days
  • We take care of the loan payoff and title for you

Seven reasons

Why trade in your car with Reineke

  • A firm number, not a range

Your trade-in value comes from a Reineke appraiser who has seen your vehicle, in person or from photos.

  • 7 days to decide

Your offer stays good for a full week. Shop around, talk it over at home, then come back.

  • No hidden fees

The number we give you is the number you get. Nothing is taken off at signing.

  • Loan payoff handled

Still making payments? We pay your lender directly and do the paperwork.

  • 8 stores, 6 towns

Findlay, Lima, Fostoria, Tiffin and North Baltimore in Ohio, plus Southgate, Michigan.

  • Hundreds of vehicles to choose from

Trade toward new or pre-owned Ford, Lincoln, Honda, Nissan, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram.

  • No obligation

What is the process of trading in a car at Reineke?

Trading in a car should take one visit, not a whole weekend. Here's how it works:

  1. Tell us about your car.

Enter your plate or VIN, or the year, make and model. Add the mileage, trim and condition. It takes about two minutes.

  2. Get your trade-in value.

A Reineke appraiser reviews your vehicle and gives you one firm offer. Want it confirmed in person? Bring it to any store for a quick walk-around and test drive.

  3. Pick your next vehicle.

Browse new and pre-owned inventory across all of our stores. Your trade-in value is applied right on the deal sheet, so you see your real cost.

  4. We handle the rest.

We contact your lender, pay off the loan, transfer the title and apply any equity to your purchase. You sign and drive home.

Car trade-in value: how we work out what your car is worth

Your car's trade-in value is the amount a dealer credits you toward your next vehicle. At Reineke, it comes down to six things:

Year, make, model and trim
Popular trucks and SUVs hold value best in Ohio and Michigan
Mileage
Lower is better, but we still trade in cars well past 100,000 miles
Condition
Dents, worn tires, warning lights and interior wear are priced in
History
Accidents, title brands, number of owners and service records
Local demand
Vehicles our customers want on our own lots are worth more to us
Season
4x4 trucks and SUVs are in higher demand ahead of winter

Online estimates are a useful starting point. They can't see your new tires, your service records or the rust on your rockers. They also don't know what sells this month on our lots in Findlay, Lima and Fostoria. A Reineke appraiser does, which is why our number is one you can actually use today.

The trade-in tax advantage

In Ohio, when you trade in toward a new vehicle, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the two. Michigan also gives a trade-in tax credit, up to a state limit. On a typical deal, that can be worth hundreds of dollars. Your sales advisor will show the exact figure on your paperwork.

Still making payments

Can I trade in a car I still owe money on?

Yes. Most of the cars we trade in still have a loan on them. We get the payoff amount from your lender and pay it directly. Then one of two things happens:

Positive equity

Your car is worth more than you owe. The difference goes toward your next vehicle, or back to you.

Negative equity

You owe more than the car is worth. We show you the numbers up front and walk through your options, such as a larger down payment, a different vehicle, or waiting a few months. You decide before anything is signed.

Lower your payment

Trading in for a cheaper car to lower your payment

Trading in for a cheaper car is one of the fastest ways to cut a monthly payment. If you have equity in your current truck or SUV, trading a car in for a cheaper one can cover most of your down payment and shrink your loan. Our team can price both sides in one visit, your trade-in and the vehicle you're looking at, so you see the real monthly saving before you decide.

Good times to trade down include

  • When the kids move out
  • When you start working from home
  • When you no longer need to tow
  • When fuel and insurance costs are stretching the budget

  2. Before 100,000 miles

  3. While you have equity

While you still have positive equity in your loan

  4. Before the warranty ends

  5. Ahead of winter

5 Things to
bring along

What to bring when you trade in your car

  • Your title, or your lender's name and loan account number if it's financed
  • A valid photo ID for every person on the title
  • Current registration
  • All keys and key fobs (a missing fob can lower your trade-in value)
  • Service records, if you have them, since they can raise your value

In Ohio, the seller's signature on the title must be notarized. In Michigan, no notary is needed. In both states, you keep your license plates.

Trade-in questions

Get your trade-in value online, bring the vehicle in for a short inspection, choose your next vehicle, and sign. We handle the loan payoff and the title transfer.
